Slideshow: The Autonomous Youth Council

This summer, Youth Forward MKE embarked on an inspiring journey aimed at cultivating the next generation of community leaders: the Autonomous Youth Council. During the council’s Summer Academy, our 29 members engaged in an intensive program designed to build their skills in leadership, advocacy and systems thinking.

Over the past few months, participants immersed themselves in a range of educational activities, from exploring the history of Milwaukee's education system to learning about culturally responsive teaching methods. Hands-on sessions in community organizing and youth-adult equity were complemented by interactive exercises, field trips and breathwork to enhance their learning experience.

The slideshow showcases moments from these impactful sessions, as well as their end-of-summer celebration on August 2, capturing the dedication and enthusiasm of our youth as they prepared for their future roles as active, informed citizens. As we look ahead to the fall, the council will continue to deepen their understanding of local policy, budgeting and data-driven decision-making. These young leaders are set to take on significant roles in 2025, applying their newly honed skills to real-world challenges and opportunities at partner organizations.

Explore the slideshow to see how these future leaders have been learning and growing together, all in pursuit of making a lasting impact on our community.
